Brandonians out in force to tackle litter

March 24, 2025

During the weekend of 22nd and 23rd March over 50 individuals hit the streets of Brandon armed with litter sticks as part of The Great British Spring Clean.

Residents were joined by children from Glade Academy and members of Brandon & District Rotary club to help clean up our town.

The event was organised by Brandon in Bloom as part of The Great British Spring Clean which is a Keep Britain Tidy initiative.

Before the event the Brandon in Bloom team committed to collecting 50 bags. Unfortunately, as we wish there wasn’t any litter to collect, the number collected was more than 100 bags!

Some interesting items were found on the pick including bits of cars, a chair, street signs and a couple of bananas with half of a cauliflower head! One group collected over 70 glass bottles along the forest road to Santon Downham, if left these pose a fire risk.

Cllr Victor Lukaniuk said: “I witnessed the enormous amount of litter and rubbish collected by Brandon’s volunteers. There were countless bags, bulging with litter.

Those volunteers were so industrious and committed we can only admire their dedication along with their community spirit. We are so lucky to be among people who care for their surroundings. A massive thank you to each and every one of them.”

Brandon Royal British Legion Branch very kindly provided free refreshments and a buffet for anyone taking part in the litter pick.

West Suffolk Council provided litter sticks and bin bags and collected the full bags after the pick.

Our thanks to every single person who took part.
